Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
