A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
